Innovaccer, the Indian-origin healthcare technology unicorn based in San Francisco, has announced another round of layoffs while rapidly expanding its artificial intelligence business. The company was founded in 2014 by IIT Kharagpur graduates Abhinav Shashank, Kanav Hasija, and Sandeep Gupta. Over the years, Innovaccer has grown from a small data startup into one of the leading AI-driven healthcare companies in the US.

In May 2026, the company reportedly laid off around 340 employees across India and the US. The move came just a few months after Innovaccer completed a ₹600 crore ESOP buyback programme for current and former employees. The layoffs are part of the company’s shift toward becoming a more “AI-native” organisation, where many routine tasks are now being handled through artificial intelligence systems.

How Innovaccer Started

Innovaccer’s journey began when its founders worked on big data projects connected to research work for Harvard and Wharton between 2012 and 2014. Later, they identified a bigger opportunity in the US healthcare industry and shifted their focus completely toward healthcare technology in 2016.

One of the biggest problems in US healthcare was disconnected patient data. Hospitals often used different software systems that could not easily share information with each other. Innovaccer solved this by building more than 100 connectors that linked older healthcare systems such as Epic, Cerner, and Allscripts.

This helped the company create unified healthcare records for over 80 million patients. The platform quickly became popular among hospitals and healthcare providers looking to improve patient care and data management.

Company Focus Shifts Towards AI

After building a strong healthcare data platform, Innovaccer started developing software applications for hospitals and insurance providers. These tools helped organisations manage patient care, track treatments, improve scheduling, handle billing, and manage healthcare operations more efficiently.

Now the company is entering a new phase focused heavily on artificial intelligence. Innovaccer describes its platform as “The Agentic Cloud for Healthcare,” where AI systems can complete many administrative and operational tasks automatically.

The company has developed AI agents and copilots that can help with medical coding, prior authorisations, claims management, and other repetitive healthcare processes. According to CEO Abhinav Shashank, several workflows that earlier needed large teams are now being automated using AI technology.

Healthcare systems around the world are currently facing staff shortages and increasing pressure on doctors and hospital workers. Innovaccer believes AI can reduce workload and improve efficiency across hospitals and healthcare organisations.

Strong Funding and Business Growth

Even after the layoffs, Innovaccer remains financially strong. The company has raised around $675 million so far and is currently valued at nearly $3.45 billion.

In January 2025, Innovaccer raised $275 million in its Series F funding round. Investors included B Capital, Banner Health, Danaher, Kaiser Permanente, Generation Investment Management, and M12.

The company also reported strong financial performance for the year ending March 2025. Innovaccer recorded operating revenue of ₹387.71 crore and a profit of ₹36.1 crore. It also achieved positive cash flow in the final quarter of 2024 and estimated around 50% year-on-year revenue growth.

Along with organic growth, the company expanded through several acquisitions. It acquired healthcare marketing platform Cured, pharmacy technology company Pharmacy Quality Solutions, actuarial AI company Humbi AI, and virtual care platform Story Health.

Today, Innovaccer works with more than 130 healthcare organisations, including major US health systems like Kaiser Permanente and Banner Health.

Layoffs Show Growing Impact of AI

This is the third major layoff round at Innovaccer in the last four years. In 2022, the company laid off nearly 100 employees during the global slowdown in the tech industry. In early 2023, it reduced another 15% of its workforce.

The latest layoffs appear to be more connected to automation and AI adoption rather than financial problems. Across the global technology sector, many companies are using AI tools to reduce manual work and improve efficiency.

For India’s startup ecosystem, Innovaccer’s journey shows both the opportunities and challenges created by artificial intelligence. While the company continues to grow rapidly and expand internationally, its restructuring also reflects how AI is changing jobs and workplace structures across industries.

As healthcare organisations continue investing in AI-powered systems, Innovaccer is trying to position itself as a major player in the future of healthcare technology.
