Amazon India has expanded Amazon Now to more than 120 cities. The company said the move doubles the service’s reach in two weeks. The rollout comes as Amazon prepares for the festive shopping period.

New city reach

The new markets include Amritsar, Abohar, Jalandhar, Ambala, Mangalore, Manipal, Visakhapatnam, Kochi, Changanassery, Bhubaneswar and Karwar, the company said.

Amazon Now delivers daily essentials within minutes. The range covers groceries, fresh fruits and vegetables, frozen foods, personal care, beauty, fashion, small appliances, home essentials and kitchen products.

Harsh Goyal, Vice President for Everyday Essentials at Amazon India, said the service was reaching India’s hinterland. He pointed to Amritsar and Abohar in the north and Kochi and Changanassery in the south.

Quick commerce has become the most crowded corner of Indian retail. Large industrial bets and new funding rounds are both running alongside the delivery race.

Delivery network

Nearly 800 micro-fulfilment and urban fulfilment centres across India support the service, Amazon (aboutamazon.in) said. That network is what makes delivery in minutes possible across categories.

Amazon plans to take Amazon Now past 300 cities. The company calls the goal one of the country’s largest delivery-in-minutes networks, though it did not give a timeline.

Sales momentum

Amazon recently said Amazon Now had crossed an annualised gross sales run rate of $1 billion in India. That figure covers a three-month period. Its orders are doubling every quarter, which makes it the fastest-growing ecommerce unit in Amazon India’s history, the company said.

“We are delighted to take ultra-fast deliveries with Amazon Now to India’s hinterland,” Goyal said. He said the rollout was timed before the Amazon Great Indian Festival. The aim, he said, is fast and reliable delivery across the country.

Festive offers

Amazon said the Great Indian Festival begins on 8 October, and Amazon Now customers will receive deals across categories. The company said it will offer a 10 percent instant discount on SBI credit cards, debit cards and EMI transactions. Amazon said Prime members will get extra savings on select purchases.

What To Watch

  • Whether Amazon converts the 120-city footprint into the 300-city target before rivals widen their own quick-commerce reach.
  • How much of the festive demand Amazon Now holds once the sale period ends.

The company did not say which cities come next in the rollout.
