Marathon Fusion, a San Francisco startup working on fusion technology, says it has turned mercury into stable gold. The company claims the reaction ran at 10 times the rate of the record set by CERN in 2025. It shared the claim in a post on X that drew 6.5 million impressions.
What Marathon Fusion has not shared is how much gold the experiment produced. It has also not disclosed the production cost, the purity of the material or whether the process can be repeated at a commercial scale. Those gaps matter more than the announcement.

What Marathon Fusion Claims
The company says it demonstrated what it calls high-rate alchemy, converting mercury into real, stable gold. Its broader pitch is not about jewellery or bullion. Marathon Fusion says it is building the engineering needed for future fusion power plants, and that the same neutron source can produce scarce medical isotopes for cancer diagnosis and treatment.
That framing is deliberate. A startup that says it can make gold gets attention. A startup that says it can make cancer-treatment isotopes gets customers.
How The Transmutation Works
The technique is nuclear transmutation, which changes an atom’s nucleus and turns one element into another. That is different from a chemical reaction, which only rearranges atoms.
Marathon Fusion’s process starts with mercury-198, a stable isotope of mercury that occurs in nature. Fusion-generated neutrons hit it and convert it into mercury-197. That isotope then decays into gold-197, which is the stable form of gold. Radioactive byproducts created along the way remain a problem the company has acknowledged.
The underlying physics is not in dispute. In May 2025, researchers at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider reported producing gold nuclei through collisions involving lead nuclei. The question has never been whether gold can be made. It is whether it can be made in useful quantities at a cost below the metal’s market price.
What The Company Has Not Disclosed
Four numbers decide whether this is a breakthrough or a lab demonstration. The mass of gold produced, the energy consumed per gram, the purity of the output and the radioactive waste handling. Marathon Fusion has published none of them.
That does not make the claim false. It makes it unverified. A company that genuinely had a commercially viable route to gold would face no reason to withhold the mass produced, because the number would be the strongest part of the story. The silence suggests the quantity is small, which is also what the physics predicts at this stage.
Why The Real Business Is Not Gold
Look at the other two claims in the same announcement. Marathon Fusion says it has selectively compressed isotopes using a plasma centrifuge, beating a Soviet-era record that stood for 40 years. It also says it has begun producing radioactive copper isotopes by irradiating zinc with fusion-generated neutrons.
Isotope supply is a smaller market than gold and a far more valuable one. Medical isotopes for cancer imaging and therapy are scarce, priced high and bought by hospitals and radiopharmacies rather than speculators. A working neutron source that reliably produces them has a business case today. Gold does not, unless the energy cost falls by orders of magnitude.
This is also why the gold claim should be read as positioning. Fusion startups are competing for capital in a market that has heard a lot of timelines and seen few power plants. A story that travels on social media is worth something to a company raising money for a technology that will take years to prove.
What To Watch
Three things would turn this from a post into a result. A published number for the mass of gold produced, with the method and the error bars. A third-party verification, since a fusion record claim carries little weight without one. And the medical isotope line, which is where Marathon Fusion’s revenue will come from if the engineering holds. Until at least one of those lands, the honest reading is this. The physics is real, the gold is a headline and the business, if there is one, is in the isotopes.
