India has plenty of EV chargers on paper. The problem is how many of them actually work. Ionage, a startup that sells the software layer for charging networks, has raised $1.3 million in pre-Series A funding to go after that gap.

The round came from strategic investors and a consortium of senior executives from global energy and infrastructure companies.

How Ionage will use the funds

Ionage plans to cover all active EV charging networks in India. It also wants to improve charger discoverability and payment services.

A third goal is helping smaller charge point operators run their stations more efficiently. That is where most of India’s fragmented capacity sits.

The numbers Ionage brings

The company says it has onboarded more than 25,000 four-wheeler charging points, and supports at least 63 fleets and 75 charging partners. Its network spans 33 states and Union Territories, covering close to 3,000 cities.

It also claims its platform runs on more than 70 per cent of India’s charging hardware. It connects with major charger makers at the point of installation.

The problem it is chasing

Public charging in India suffers from two issues: unreliable chargers and no common way to use them. Ionage says nearly two in five public chargers are non-functional at any given time. In 2025, India had one charger for every 235 EVs.

Its answer is a software and interoperability layer that links charge point operators, OEMs, real estate owners and drivers. The idea is that a driver can find, use and pay for charging across networks without downloading a separate app for each operator.

“We’re building the layer that fixes that: the operating system every charger can run on, whoever owns it,” said Vimal Kumar V, co-founder and chief executive. Reliability, he said, should stop being the exception.

The product line

Nexus lets operators manage networks, monitor sessions, track users and control access. The IONAGE App lets drivers find chargers, plan routes and pay. Flo is a marketplace that connects charging operators with fleet operators.

CASA handles home charging and energy management and is in beta. The company also offers a Discovery API that feeds real-time charging data into vehicle systems and maps. Its SDK for businesses is in closed beta.

What comes next

Over 18 months, Ionage wants to help build charge point operator micro-clusters in Tier II cities. It is targeting monthly energy throughput of at least 20 million units within 12 months. That assumes month-on-month growth of 25 per cent or more.

The market is moving. India had 52,718 public EV charging stations as of July 2026. Of these, 16,561 were fast chargers for cars, according to the Ministry of Heavy Industries. The PM E-DRIVE scheme has set aside Rs 2,000 crore for public charging infrastructure.
