Bengaluru-based social networking startup Kutumb has quietly forayed into the online dating segment with the launch of Polo, a dedicated gay dating app in India. Backed by global investment giant Tiger Global, Kutumb’s latest move signals its growing ambitions beyond community networking and into niche consumer internet categories.

Currently available on the Google Play Store, Polo is designed specifically for the LGBTQ+ community, particularly targeting gay users looking for meaningful connections and safe interactions in the digital space. While the company has not made a large public announcement yet, the app is already live and gaining traction, suggesting a soft launch strategy before a broader marketing push.

What Polo Brings to the Table

Polo focuses on creating a secure and authentic dating experience. One of its core features is selfie-based profile verification, aimed at reducing fake accounts and enhancing user trust — a key concern in India’s online dating ecosystem. The app also offers smart matchmaking tools that help users discover compatible matches based on preferences and interests.

In addition to real-time messaging, Polo supports audio and video calling features, allowing users to interact more freely before deciding to meet offline. Interest-based filters such as age, location, and profile preferences help streamline the discovery process. Users can also create private photo albums, giving them more control over what they choose to share.

Kutumb’s Expansion Strategy

The company’s financial performance has also supported its expansion strategy. In FY25, Kutumb reportedly saw a sharp rise in revenue, crossing ₹128 crore, compared to the previous year’s ₹47 crore. The startup also turned profitable, reporting a net profit of around ₹12 crore after incurring losses in the earlier fiscal year. This financial turnaround gives the company more room to experiment with new products like Polo.

Back in 2021, Kutumb raised $26 million in a Series A funding round led by Tiger Global, with participation from several well-known investors. The backing from Tiger Global has played a crucial role in enabling the company to explore new segments aggressively.

Entering India’s Growing LGBTQ+ Dating Market

India’s dating app ecosystem has evolved rapidly over the last decade, but dedicated LGBTQ+ platforms still represent a niche yet growing market. While global players already operate in this segment, there remains significant room for homegrown apps that better understand local cultural nuances and user behaviour.

Industry insiders suggest that Polo has already started generating early revenue, reportedly touching around ₹5 crore per month. If these numbers hold steady, the app could quickly establish itself as a meaningful player in the space.

Kutumb’s entry into the gay dating segment with Polo reflects a larger shift in India’s startup ecosystem, where companies are increasingly building specialised platforms for underserved communities. With growing digital adoption, changing social attitudes, and improved legal recognition of LGBTQ+ rights, the timing could work in Polo’s favour.

As the company continues to refine its offering and potentially scale marketing efforts, Polo’s success will depend on user trust, community building, and sustained innovation.
