Tata Consultancy Services kept adding people through the September quarter. The IT services major added 4,258 employees on a net basis in Q2, taking its total workforce to 598,056.

That makes it the third quarter in a row in which TCS has raised its headcount. The company added around 9,279 employees in Q1, which takes net hiring for the first half of FY27 to 13,537.

Attrition keeps easing

Attrition, long the sore point for Indian IT, improved again. TCS’s 12-month trailing attrition rate fell to 13.3 per cent from 13.6 per cent in the previous quarter.

A stable bench matters for a company this size. The headcount is now nearly six lakh. Even a small shift in attrition changes how much hiring TCS needs just to stand still.

10,000 freshers joined in Q2

TCS made 25,000 offers to freshers at the start of FY27. Around 14,000 had joined by the end of Q1, and another 10,000 came on board in the September quarter.

Chief HR officer Sudeep Kunnumal said the company is now in the last leg of its campus hiring for the year. Fresher intake is watched closely in the IT industry. It feeds the bench that staffs large outsourcing contracts two to three years down the line.

More learning hours, more subcontractors

“We continue to build a future-ready workforce through upskilling our employees and hiring top talent,” Kunnumal said. Learning hours rose 17 per cent sequentially to 17.1 million in the quarter.

TCS also leaned more on subcontractors to meet demand and fix supply-demand mismatches. Chief financial officer Sameer Saxena said the increase showed up across India as well as overseas. It was not entirely down to higher visa costs.

The numbers behind the hiring

Kunnumal said the company is hiring ahead of demand for newer technology skills. “We are definitely seeing the demand up, especially for next-gen scale,” he said. All of its hiring, he added, is aimed at capturing that demand.

The financials support the mood. In Q2, TCS reported a 4 per cent sequential rise in net profit to Rs 13,884 crore. Consolidated revenue from operations grew 1.3 per cent quarter-on-quarter to Rs 73,188 crore.

TCS spent two years trimming costs and managing utilisation. Three straight quarters of net hiring is the clearest signal yet that demand for IT services has steadied.
