Fresh meat and seafood delivery brand Zappfresh has taken a decisive step to expand beyond its core business by acquiring a majority stake in Avyom Foodtech, a ready-to-cook (RTC) and ready-to-eat (RTE) meat brand. The move signals Zappfresh’s growing focus on convenience-led food categories as urban consumption patterns continue to evolve across India.

The acquisition has been approved by the board of DSM Fresh Foods Limited, the parent entity operating Zappfresh. As part of the deal, DSM Fresh Foods will invest ₹7.5 crore through a private placement to secure a 51% stake in Avyom Foodtech. The transaction is expected to be completed over the coming months, subject to standard regulatory and operational approvals.

Strategic Expansion into Convenience Foods

With this acquisition, Zappfresh is formally entering the rapidly growing RTC and RTE food segment. While the company has built its reputation around delivering fresh, hygienic meat directly to consumers, the addition of processed and semi-processed products allows it to tap into a much larger consumption basket.

Avyom Foodtech specialises in a wide range of RTC and RTE meat-based offerings, including frozen products, marinades, gravies, and easy-to-prepare meal solutions. The segment has witnessed strong demand from working professionals, nuclear families, and younger consumers who seek quicker cooking options without compromising on taste and food safety.

Manufacturing Capabilities Strengthen Zappfresh’s Supply Chain

A key highlight of the acquisition is Avyom Foodtech’s existing manufacturing infrastructure. The company operates a fully functional food processing facility spread across nearly five acres, equipped with modern plant and machinery designed for scalable production.

By bringing these assets in-house, Zappfresh gains immediate access to manufacturing capacity that would otherwise take years to develop. This integration is expected to significantly reduce time-to-market for new product launches and improve operational efficiency across sourcing, processing, and distribution.

Building an End-to-End Food Platform

The deal marks a strategic shift for Zappfresh from being a fresh meat delivery platform to an end-to-end food solutions company. With control over both fresh and processed meat categories, the company can now cater to a wider range of consumer preferences, covering daily cooking needs as well as convenience-focused consumption occasions.

Industry observers note that this move aligns with a broader trend in India’s foodtech sector, where brands are increasingly diversifying product lines to balance margins, manage supply chain volatility, and unlock new revenue streams.

Future Growth and Export Opportunities

Founded in 2022, Avyom Foodtech has also been positioning itself for export-oriented growth. Its processing capabilities and compliance-driven manufacturing processes open up new opportunities for Zappfresh to explore international markets, particularly in regions where Indian RTC and RTE foods are witnessing rising demand.

The management has indicated that Avyom Foodtech may also raise additional capital in the future by issuing fresh equity to strategic investors, which could further accelerate expansion plans in both domestic and overseas markets.

Impact on India’s Foodtech Landscape

As consumer behaviour shifts toward convenience and value-added products, Zappfresh’s majority acquisition of Avyom Foodtech reflects how established D2C brands are adapting to changing market dynamics. The move strengthens Zappfresh’s competitive position while highlighting the growing importance of processed and ready food categories in India’s foodtech ecosystem.

With fresh meat, RTC, and RTE offerings now under one umbrella, Zappfresh is well-positioned to deepen customer engagement, increase average order value, and build a more resilient business model in an increasingly competitive market.
