Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 16 marked ten years of the flagship Startup India initiative, calling it a movement that has reshaped India’s economic and innovation landscape. Addressing entrepreneurs, policymakers and young innovators in the national capital on National Startup Day, the Prime Minister said the programme has empowered India’s youth to turn ideas into scalable businesses and become job creators rather than job seekers.

He described Startup India as a journey that began with confidence in the country’s talent and today stands as a symbol of India’s entrepreneurial strength. According to the Prime Minister, the initiative is no longer just a government scheme, but a nationwide movement driven by aspiration, innovation and self-belief.

Startup India’s Journey from Vision to Reality

Launched in January 2016, Startup India was designed to create a strong ecosystem for nurturing innovation and entrepreneurship across the country. Over the past decade, the programme has played a crucial role in reducing regulatory hurdles, improving access to capital and encouraging risk-taking among young founders.

From a few hundred startups at the time of its launch, India now has over two lakhs officially recognised startups operating across sectors such as technology, healthcare, agriculture, education, clean energy and manufacturing. This rapid growth has positioned India among the top startup ecosystems globally, reflecting the impact of sustained policy support and ecosystem building.

Rise of Unicorns and Job Creation

One of the most visible indicators of Startup India’s success has been the sharp rise in unicorn startups. From just a handful a decade ago, India today hosts more than a hundred unicorns, many of which have gained global recognition for innovation and scale.

Beyond valuations, the initiative has generated significant employment. The expanding startup ecosystem is estimated to have created over 20 lakh direct jobs, contributing meaningfully to economic growth and youth employment. PM Modi highlighted that startups today are not only building profitable businesses but also solving real-life problems and strengthening local economies.

Expanding Beyond Metro Cities

The Prime Minister underlined that the startup revolution is no longer limited to large cities like Bengaluru or Mumbai. Thousands of new-age companies are emerging from Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, reflecting deeper penetration of entrepreneurship across the country.

Women entrepreneurs, rural innovators and first-generation founders have increasingly become active participants in the startup ecosystem. This inclusive growth, the Prime Minister said, is one of the biggest achievements of the programme over the past ten years.

Innovation-Led Growth and Future Vision

PM Modi emphasised that India’s next phase of growth will be driven by innovation and technology. He called upon startups to focus on emerging areas such as artificial intelligence, deep tech, space technology, biotechnology and sustainable solutions that can address global challenges.

He also stressed the importance of manufacturing, product development and global competitiveness, urging Indian startups to create world-class products while staying rooted in local needs. The government, he assured, will continue to support entrepreneurs through policy reforms, funding mechanisms and innovation platforms.

Looking Ahead to the Next Decade

As Startup India enters its second decade, the focus is expected to shift towards quality growth, technological leadership and global scale. The Prime Minister said the coming years present an opportunity for India to lead global startup trends and redefine innovation on its own terms.

The ten-year milestone of Startup India stands as a testament to India’s entrepreneurial spirit, youthful energy and growing confidence on the global stage. With continued support and a strong culture of innovation, India’s startup ecosystem is poised to play a central role in shaping the nation’s economic future.
