Breaking into the defence sector is no easy feat, especially for smaller players. However, Bengaluru-based Tonbo Imaging has defied expectations by securing significant defence contracts. Known for its cutting-edge night-vision technology, the startup—backed by prominent investors like Qualcomm Ventures and Artiman – has achieved a major milestone by partnering with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL).
Funding Boost and Valuation
Tonbo Imaging, a Bengaluru-based defence technology startup, has raised INR 175 crore (approximately $20.4 million) in its Series D funding round. The investment was led by Florintree Advisors and EXIM Bank, valuing the company at INR 1,500 crore. This marks a significant growth from its previous valuation of INR 400 crore during its Series B round in 2017.
Revolutionizing Defence Technology
Founded in 2012 by Arvind Lakshmikumar, Ankit Kumar, and Cecilia D’Souza, Tonbo Imaging specializes in biomimetic imaging systems inspired by nature. Its cutting-edge products include AI-powered seekers, thermal weapon sights, coastal surveillance systems, and see-through armour. These innovations are designed to enhance reconnaissance, surveillance, and targeting capabilities for modern warfare.
The company supplies its advanced imaging solutions to the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Indian Air Force, and other global defence agencies. With operations spanning India, the US, Greece, and Poland, Tonbo Imaging has established itself as a key player in defence technology.
India’s Defence Tech Ecosystem
India’s defence sector is witnessing rapid growth, with production reaching INR 1.27 lakh crore in FY24—a 174% surge from FY15 levels. Startups like Tonbo Imaging, Garuda Aerospace, and ideaForge are leveraging technologies such as AI and unmanned systems to address the rising demand for innovative solutions.
Government initiatives are also fueling this growth. Collaborations like Karnataka’s partnership with DRDO provide startups access to testing facilities. Additionally, funds such as Ajay Kumar’s INR 250 crore MountTech Growth Fund are supporting early-stage ventures in defence and aerospace.
Future Plans for Tonbo Imaging
With fresh funding in place, Tonbo Imaging plans to accelerate research and development of autonomous battlefield systems while expanding its global footprint. The company aims to strengthen India’s position as a leader in defence exports by delivering cutting-edge solutions tailored for high-stakes environments.
