In the vibrant world of Bollywood during the 1990s, numerous actresses captivated audiences with their exceptional performances. Icons like Madhuri Dixit, Raveena Tandon, Ayesha Jhulka, and Meenakshi Seshadri dominated the silver screen, but one name that consistently resonated with fans was Karishma Kapoor. With her debut in the 1991 film ‘Prem Qaidi,’ Karishma quickly rose to fame, becoming a household name overnight. Her journey in the industry was not only marked by success but also by intense drama, especially during the shoot of her film ‘Jigar’ around 33 years ago, where an emotional incident unfolded that led her to leave the set in tears.

The Turbulent Times of Karishma Kapoor’s Career

As Karishma Kapoor’s popularity soared in the ’90s, so did the rumors of catfights and rivalries with other actresses. One such reported altercation was with Raveena Tandon, which Karishma addressed in an interview with Stardust. However, it wasn’t just her co-stars that faced her wrath; tensions also arose between Karishma and choreographer Chinni Prakash, adding to the drama of her early career. This clash ultimately resulted in a moment of emotional turmoil for the actress.

Emotional Breakdown on Set

During the shooting of ‘Jigar,’ an incident occurred that shook Karishma’s composure. The film’s choreography was being handled by Chinni Prakash and Raju Khan, and in a particular dance sequence, Karishma struggled to master a specific step. Frustrated, Chinni Prakash lost his temper, which deeply upset the actress. Feeling disheartened and offended, Karishma decided to cancel the shoot and left the set in tears. The film’s producer, Salim Akhtar, tried to console her, but his efforts were unproductive at that moment. It wasn’t until Chinni Prakash personally apologized to her that she agreed to continue with the film.

Karishma’s Perspective on the Incident

Later, when Karishma reflected on this incident, she emphasized the importance of how frustration should be expressed. In her words, “If Chinni Prakash was upset, he shouldn’t have taken it out on his stars. He unleashed his anger on me, although I had done nothing wrong. I am not accustomed to such situations, which led me to start crying, but I did not cancel the shoot. It was almost wrapped, and I couldn’t shoot in that state of mind, so I walked away. However, later on, Salim ji called me and Chinni Prakash also apologized.”

This episode shed light on the pressures faced by actors and the emotional challenges they endure behind the glitz and glamour of Bollywood. Karishma Kapoor’s experience is a testament to the trials of maintaining professionalism while navigating personal emotions in a highly competitive industry. Despite such incidents, her talent and charm continued to solidify her status as one of the celebrated actresses of her time.
