The Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), a flagship initiative by the Indian government, has appointed Vibhor Jain as its Acting CEO. This move comes after the resignation of founding CEO Thampy Koshy, who will officially step down in June 2025, marking the end of his three-year tenure at the helm.

Leadership Transition: A New Era for ONDC

Vibhor Jain, who has been serving as ONDC’s Chief Operating Officer and President – Network Governance, now assumes full executive authority. His elevation brings an end to the interim leadership model managed by the eight-member Executive Committee, streamlining decision-making at a crucial phase for the network.

Jain’s Track Record and Vision

With over 18 years of experience in entrepreneurship and consulting, Vibhor Jain is recognized for his expertise in designing and delivering technology-driven, large-scale transformation programmes. Since joining ONDC, he has played a pivotal role in shaping its operational structure and driving its mission to democratize digital commerce across India.

In his first remarks as Acting CEO, Jain said: “It is an honour to take on this responsibility at a time when ONDC is expanding its footprint and impact across the country. I am committed to working closely with the Board, stakeholders, and the broader ecosystem to ensure continuity and momentum as we deliver on our mission to democratise digital commerce in India.”

Board’s Confidence in Jain’s Leadership

The ONDC Board has expressed strong confidence in Jain’s ability to lead the organisation during this transition. A Board Member stated that Jain has played a pivotal role in shaping ONDC’s operational framework and is well-positioned to guide the organisation through its next phase.

Another Board Member added: “As Vibhor steps into the role of Acting CEO, the Board is confident in his ability to lead with clarity and purpose. His deep experience and unwavering commitment to ONDC’s mission make him well-suited to guide the organisation forward as we continue to build an inclusive and open digital commerce ecosystem.”

ONDC’s Recent Growth and Strategic Focus

ONDC, backed by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), has rapidly expanded its national footprint. The platform has recorded over 200 million transactions since its operational launch, with the last 100 million completed in just six months. ONDC connects sellers and buyers across sectors like mobility, food delivery, logistics, ecommerce, and fashion, aiming to create an open and inclusive digital commerce ecosystem for India.

What Lies Ahead

As ONDC continues its search for a permanent Managing Director and CEO, Jain’s immediate focus will be on driving cohesive execution of strategic decisions and maintaining the network’s growth momentum. The end of the Executive Committee’s interim oversight signals a new chapter, with single-point leadership expected to accelerate ONDC’s mission of transforming digital commerce in India.
