The blockbuster film ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’, directed by Karan Johar, celebrates 24 years of its release. This cinematic masterpiece continues to hold a special place in the hearts of Bollywood fans. Known as one of the biggest hits in Hindi cinema, the film, featuring stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Kajol, and Amitabh Bachchan, still entertains families and friends alike. Spanning over three and a half hours, the movie contains numerous scenes that were shot but ultimately deleted from the final version, making fans wonder what could have been if these moments were included.
The Legacy of ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’
Though many consider Dharma Productions synonymous with iconic films of the 90s, such as ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’ and ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’, these films also had several entertaining scenes that did not make it to the final cut. Some of these deleted scenes could have added depth and enjoyment, enhancing the overall viewing experience. Let’s take a closer look at these intriguing moments that were left on the cutting room floor.
Rahul and Anjali’s Romantic Dance Sequence
The pairing of Rahul and Anjali is so beloved that it has become cult status among millennials. Who wouldn’t want to see the romance between Shah Rukh and Kajol? While the movie features multiple scenes of their chemistry, one standout dance sequence follows the song ‘You Are My Sonia’. This particular scene showcases Rahul and Anjali dancing inside their home, while Rohan and Pooja dance outside. An uncut version of ‘You Are My Sonia’ plays in the background, making this moment downright delightful for fans.
Rahul and Anjali: Wedding and Engagement Montage
Karan Johar himself discussed an impactful sequence that was thoroughly planned but cut from the final film. This particular moment juxtaposes Rahul’s sudden wedding to Anjali following her father’s demise with the preparations for his engagement to Naina (Rani Mukerji). As Rahul exchanges vows with Anjali, Amitabh Bachchan’s character, Yash, prepares for his son’s engagement. Although a similar montage exists in the film, the scenes focusing on the engagement preparations were ultimately deleted.
Rohan and Pooja’s Ten-Year Reunion
In the film, Rohan, played by Hrithik Roshan, returns to London after ten years to bring his brother Rahul and sister-in-law Anjali back home. Upon his arrival, he encounters Pooja, portrayed by Kareena Kapoor. Although Rohan recognizes her, Pooja does not immediately recall him. Their nostalgic interaction includes a playful riddle from childhood, which jogs her memory. Following this heartwarming moment, an additional scene was filmed showing Rohan and Pooja standing far apart, gradually drawing closer together as flashbacks of Rahul, Anjali, Pooja, and Saida (Farida Jalal) living in London unfold.
