Mahindra & Mahindra is not just a prominent player in the SUV market but is now setting its sights on revolutionizing the electric vehicle (EV) segment. With a strategic move to challenge Tata Motors, the company launched its latest born-electric models, Mahindra XEV 9e and Mahindra BE 6. These vehicles have garnered attention and shattered booking records on their very first day of availability.
Unprecedented Booking Figures
In a groundbreaking achievement, Mahindra has reported a staggering booking worth ₹8,472 crores across the two models, reflecting an immense demand for electric vehicles in India. This significant milestone not only emphasizes Mahindra’s commitment to the EV sector but also showcases the growing consumer interest in sustainable transportation.
30,000+ Cars Booked
Both the Mahindra XEV 9e and Mahindra BE 6 have been developed as fully electric vehicles, categorizing them as born-electric cars. Upon opening bookings, the company quickly received over 30,179 orders. Notably, 56% of these bookings were for the Mahindra XEV 9e, while 44% were for the Mahindra BE 6, indicating a balanced market reception for both models.
This remarkable interest is particularly significant as the total electric vehicle sales in India for the year 2024 have been reported at just 100,000 units. Thus, securing over 30,000 bookings on the launch day underscores a robust trend towards EV adoption among consumers.
Customer Preferences and Vehicle Specifications
Among the total customers, approximately 73% chose the higher-range versions of the vehicles equipped with a 79 kWh battery pack, promising an impressive range of over 650 kilometers on a single charge. The competitive pricing begins at ₹21.90 lakh for the Mahindra XEV 9e and ₹18.90 lakh for the BE 6, making these electric vehicles attractive for consumers who prioritize both range and affordability.
Delivery Timeline
Given the overwhelming demand, Mahindra plans to stagger the delivery process for these electric vehicles. Deliveries are set to commence in June 2025, with different phases tied to the battery pack variants chosen by customers. By August 2025, deliveries are expected to encompass all battery pack configurations. Additionally, Mahindra is hinting at the launch of a new 7-seater electric vehicle, which is anticipated to further expand its EV portfolio.
Future of Electric Vehicles in India
This surge in bookings reflects not only Mahindra’s strategic foresight but also a larger trend towards electrification in the Indian automobile market. As more consumers become environmentally conscious, the inclination towards electric vehicles is poised to increase, potentially transforming the landscape of mobility in India. Mahindra’s entry with robust models like the XEV 9e and BE 6 could very well catalyze a significant shift in market dynamics, enticing more players to enter the EV space.
