In 1993, Yash Chopra’s film ‘Darr’ made a significant impact on Indian cinema, not only for its thrilling storyline but also due to the intense performances from its lead actors. While the film featured Sunny Deol in the lead role, it was Shah Rukh Khan’s portrayal of a psychopathic lover that captured the audience’s attention, often overshadowing Deol’s efforts. The film’s reception was a mixed bag for Deol, who harbored feelings of resentment towards Khan for years. Recently, however, the duo has reconciled their differences, and Deol opened up about his frustrations in a television interview.

Sunny Deol’s Insightful Revelation on ‘Darr’

During an episode of Salman Khan’s reality show ‘Dus Ka Dum’, Sunny Deol recalled a past incident related to his experience on the set of ‘Darr’. Salman Khan’s light-hearted inquiry about the film’s controversies led Deol to reveal some fascinating behind-the-scenes moments.

Why Did Sunny Deol Tear His Jeans?

When Salman asked Sunny to elaborate on the controversies surrounding ‘Darr’, Deol chuckled and suggested moving on from the past, emphasizing that the film was ultimately successful. However, when pressed for a story about his infamous jeans incident, Deol shared the details.

“There was a scene where Shah Rukh was supposed to stab me with a knife. My character, being a commando, needed to avoid taking the knife in the back, as I felt it would convey the wrong message,” Deol explained. “Despite my concerns, no one paid heed, and we continued to debate the scene. At that moment, I was filled with rage, but I couldn’t leave the film or the set. I clenched my fists in my pockets out of frustration, and somehow, my jeans just split open, leaving everyone on set in disbelief.” Salman humorously remarked, “Well, big brother, I guess we all have something to be scared of, but I also know how sweet you are.”

A Cult Classic: The Legacy of ‘Darr’

Released on December 24, 1993, ‘Darr’ tells the gripping tale of obsessive love, where Shah Rukh Khan’s character epitomizes a deranged lover’s fervor. The role was initially offered to numerous actors, but it was Khan, a newcomer in the industry at the time, who took the plunge. His performance not only elevated the film but also marked a pivotal moment in his career. Sunny Deol, despite his pivotal role as the lead, felt overshadowed by Khan’s villainous charm. It is said that Deol completed the filming, attended the premiere, and participated in the success celebrations but remained distant from Khan throughout.
